Sun Valley
Lanes uses a Kegel Kustodian Walker automatic lane
conditioning machine. This machine has
the ability to travel from lane to lane without
human interaction and routinely travels about 8/10
of a mile/day, or about 257 miles/year. The
machine was purchased in 2008 at a cost of $36,000.
-
About one
ounce of lane conditioner is used on the lane each
day. Sun Valley's lane machine puts the same
amount of oil down on each lane, to the microliter.
-
USBC rules
require a minimum of 3 units of lane conditioner be
applied wherever conditioner is being applied at.
For a comparison, a piece of paper is approximately
9 units thick.
-
There is
no USBC rule regarding a minimum or maximum distance
a lane may be conditioned.
-
The lanes
are condition approximately 2-3 hours in advance of
the first round of leagues. Most
customers are unaware that the ideal time to
condition a lane is approximately 2-6 hours prior to
the start of league, as the solvent molecules
located in the conditioner will "line up" properly
after sitting on the lanes for this amount of time.
Conditioning a lane and then immediately bowling on
it causes the lane conditioner to break down much
quicker, which can cause the lanes to change
somewhat dramatically. The ideal conditioning
time varies, based on temperature/humidity, and Sun
Valley Lanes takes this into consideration when
deciding the time to condition the lanes.
-
The lanes
are vacuum cleaned as the "pin-side" of the lane
machine travels the lane. This allows
the cleaner (also known as "stripper") to be removed
completely before the machine deposits conditioner
on it from the "foul-line side" of the machine.
-
Diagnostics within the machine prevent the machine
from operating without cleaner and conditioner in
the machine.
-
The lanes
are cleaned and conditioned at least once/day.
-
All the lanes
are conditioned the same way, every day, except when
special tournaments/league require a special
condition (such as a PBA Experience or "sport" league).
When these events do occur, the lanes are
reconditioned back to our standard league condition
prior to the start of leagues. Differences in
ball reaction are caused by previous play on the
lane, as well as the type of equipment being used by
the customers (reactive, urethane or plastic balls).
